Free Diabetic Eye Screenings at Wills Eye Hospital
Wills Eye will provide community members access to physicians, exams, and follow-up care on Diabetes Day, April 29, 2023
PHILADELPHIA, April 10, 2023 – Wills Eye Hospital will offer free diabetic eye screenings for the community on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. for Diabetes Day. Patients will receive a professional retina screening, help coordinating follow up care, and information on diabetic health. Refractions and free eyeglass frames will be provided for patients who are in need. Appointments are required and can be made online at www.willseye.org/diabetes-day or by emailing WEODD@willseye.org.
Diabetes Day is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of annual diabetic eye exams and addressing the disparity of care across Philadelphia. Diabetic eye disease is the top cause of blindness among working age Americans and disproportionately impacts Black and Brown communities.
Vision loss is preventable with early detection and new treatments. Diabetic eye disease often has no visual symptoms, underscoring the importance of regular exams.
Wills Eye Hospital hosted its first Diabetes Day in September 2022 and served nearly 100 patients. A staggering 42 percent of those seen were unaware they needed to have their eyes checked for diabetic complications. This year, 150 appointment slots are available and pre-registration is required.
