Wills Eye, one of the premier eye hospitals in the country, is affiliated with, and is on the medical campus of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Medical Center. Both the Wills Eye residency program and numerous subspecialty fellowships are highly sought after. We are very proud of our fellowship (over 50 years old) and our former fellows (almost 200). Our Cornea Fellowship Program participates with the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Fellowship Compliance Committee (AUPO FCC).

Wills Eye offers three clinical cornea fellowship positions annually.
The fellowship begins the second week in July and is one year in duration.
The fellowship is primarily patient care oriented with significant clinical research opportunities. The fellowship includes working with all of the physicians on the Cornea service but most closely with Drs. Ayres, Finklea, Hadjokas, Kanesa-Thasan, Meghpara, Raber, Rapuano, Schoen, and Syed. In total we see about 500 patients a week. The fellows examine the patients after which the staff physician will see each patient and review the fellows’ evaluation. There are 6 other active cornea specialists on the Cornea Service with whom the fellows interact. In addition, the fellows are occasionally involved in staffing the resident Cornea Clinic.
The Wills Eye Hospital Cornea Service offers a 6-month to 1-year full-time research fellowship designed to provide medical students or ophthalmologists, both from with the United States and international sites, with the experience necessary to become a successful clinical researcher.
Our goal is to provide an opportunity for research fellows to conduct high-impact, evidenced-based projects that advance the field of Cornea and External Diseases. By performing these studies, we hope that our research fellows will contribute valuably to their local, national, and international communities.
Fellows will acquire the skills necessary to:
• Perform a scientific literature review
• Design evidence-based research projects
• Write research protocols and grant applications
• Submit research projects to an IRB
• Recruit patients for research studies
• Conduct ocular testing on research patients
• Perform medical chart reviews for retrospective studies
• Enter and analyze study data with biostatisticians
• Write and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
• Submit and present research results at national meetings
• Participate in ongoing research team meetings
