Joel Porter, MD, often reflects on a single moment that changed the course of his life. As a mathematics major at Temple University, he happened upon a posting for a summer job at Wills Eye Hospital. He applied to work as a switchboard operator, never imagining that the opportunity would introduce him to the field of ophthalmology – and ultimately become his life's calling.

"When I accepted that job, I had no idea about ophthalmology," Dr. Porter recalls.

That early experience led him to attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Wills Eye for his residency, graduating with the Class of 1970. Throughout his distinguished career as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, Dr. Porter never forgot the education, mentorship, and professional foundation he received at Wills Eye.

Inspired by the generosity of one of his own mentors, Peter R. Laibson, MD, and his wife, Ruth, Dr. Porter and his wife, Roberta, chose to create a lasting legacy of their own. Their endowed gift established the Joel and Roberta Porter Visiting Professor in Cataract and Primary Eye Care, ensuring that nationally recognized leaders will continue to share their expertise with Wills Eye physicians, residents, fellows, and students for generations to come.

The inaugural lecture welcomed renowned ophthalmologist Shameema Sikder, MD, FACS, and launched what has already become an enduring tradition of educational excellence at Wills Eye Hospital. "If I hadn't knocked on that door at Temple all those years ago, I never would have found my life's calling," Dr. Porter says.

Through their generosity, Joel and Roberta Porter are helping ensure that future generations of ophthalmologists benefit from the same spirit of curiosity, mentorship, and lifelong learning that has defined Wills Eye for nearly two centuries.
