Biography

Dr. Fabio is the Assistant Director of the ACORN ophthalmic imaging lab at Wills Eye Hospital, He received his Bachelor's Degree in Medicine from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (2001) with a medical residency in Ophthalmology at Sheba Medical Center., University of Tel Aviv (2003-2009). Part of this period was a fellowship in medical retina at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) from 2007 to 2008 and at the Glaucoma Basic Science Laboratory at Tel Aviv University, studying glaucoma and senescence models for evaluating neurodegeneration (apoptosis) of retinal ganglion cells. He completed a doctorate degree from UNIFESP, writing a thesis on a morphometric evaluation of the optic nerve head using a new parameter: the hypotenuse of the vertical optic nerve head cup with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). This paper was published in a peer-reviewed international journal. OCT is the main area of work and research.

Dr. Fabio did a post-doctoral research fellowship in 2016 at New York University (NYU) under the supervision of Dr. Gadi Wollstein and Dr. Joel Schuman, one of the inventors of OCT. Since then, he has published articles in renowned journals and participated in research lines in Glaucoma and Retina. Another area of interest is management. He completed an Executive MBA in Health at Decision Business School (Getúlio Vargas Foundation). The focus of the term paper and of interest is strategy and marketing. He was contracted after a selection process as an Ophthalmology Professor at UNISINOS - Rio Grande do Sul.
