Wills Retina Fellow Honored with Ron Michels Award

NEW ORLEANS-NOVEMBER 11, 2017... Wills Eye Retina Fellow, Christopher Aderman, MD, is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation award. The honor is being announced at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology this weekend in New Orleans.

Dr. Aderman is in the second year of his vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Dr. Aderman has been recognized for his outstanding work, skill, collaborations and interest in technology. “I have long been interested in the adoption and application of technology to advance research and clinical care” said, Dr. Aderman.

Dr. Aderman is currently involved in several projects including a translational collaboration testing a cell death pathway in retinal detachment and other retinal disorders. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and spent his residency at University of California, San Francisco.

The Ronald G. “Ron” Michels Fellowship Foundation Award is granted annually to outstanding second year fellows in training. Dr. Michels, for whom the award is named, trained more than 40 vitreoretinal fellows during his career and influenced hundreds of additional ophthalmologists who visited and served him in practice. The foundation was established in 1991 to honor the many talents of Dr. Michels and to provide funds for additional young scholars with the hopes that they will follow in his footsteps.

Wills Eye Hospital Retina Service has been the training ground for more than a dozen Ron Michels award winners through the years. Dr. Aderman is one of four winners this year; other institutions represented are Duke and The University of Pennsylvania.
