A House Call To A Hotel Room
"We were staying at a hotel near the hospital. I had undergone a plaque radiotherapy procedure that morning. Later that night, after midnight, the fire alarm went off and we track down five flights of steps to the sidewalk. It was February. We were petrified that I would start bleeding. A doctor from Wills Eye came to our hotel room at 4 am. That's impressive.
"My local ophthalmologist didn't recognize the tumor for 18 months. So I looked for the best eye cancer doctors and found them at Wills Eye in Philadelphia. I left Dr. Carol Shields a voice mail about my situation. She called back within hours, telling me to be at Wills Eye Monday morning. At that examination, she put it all on the table, saying she intended to operate on Thursday. That night, the hotel fire alarm went off.
"I have to mention Dr. Arman, a gentle man who patiently explained what was happening to me. He took away the fear. I was totally confident things were going to work out; that Wills Eye was where I was supposed to be. These people really care about you."
