Wills Eye Researcher Selected for Glaucoma Foundation Fellowship

Dr. Gabriel-Jimenez-Berrios of the ACORN Lab at Wills Eye is the recipient of The Glaucoma Foundation (sponsored by Patricia Hill) and Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) fellowship. These TGF/ RPB Fellowships in Glaucoma provide one-year $10,000 supplemental fellowships targeted to under-represented groups as defined by the NIH, who are fellows in departments of ophthalmology engaged in substantive glaucoma research.

Dr. Jimenez-Berrios’s current research focuses on the in-vivo biomechanics of the optic nerve head (ONH) and lamina cribrosa (LC). While LC biomechanics have previously been linked to glaucoma risk, his group is the first to longitudinally analyze 3D LC biomechanics in-vivo and relate them to subsequent glaucomatous damage.  By accelerating the translation of biomechanical insights into diagnostic and monitoring tools, this research has the potential to meaningfully advance glaucoma care worldwide.
