Wills Eye Hospital offers a one-year fellowship
in Neuro-Ophthalmology.
The Wills Eye Hospital Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship is a one-year, AUPO-certified program offering exceptional clinical training at one of the world’s largest and busiest neuro-ophthalmology practices, with approximately 6,000 patient visits annually.
Open to candidates who have completed residency in ophthalmology or neurology, the program provides immersive exposure to the full spectrum of neuro-ophthalmic disorders, ranging from urgent presentations in our 24/7 Wills Eye Emergency Room to complex tertiary referrals from across the region.
Fellows with a surgical interest have the opportunity to participate in a range of procedures tailored to their career goals, including oculoplastic surgery, strabismus surgery, and cataract extraction.
Fellows benefit from close mentorship by our faculty—Drs. Robert Sergott, Sarah Thornton, Shruthi Harish, and Danijel Pericic—and gain expertise in advanced diagnostic modalities such as OCT, visual electrophysiology, and neuroimaging.
The program’s rich interdisciplinary environment includes collaborative case management and conferences with neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, ENT, rheumatology, and other subspecialties, enhanced by our affiliation with the Jefferson Neuroscience Center. Fellows participate in a robust educational curriculum, featuring weekly Chiefs Rounds, subspecialty case conferences, including dedicated sessions with neuroradiology, and the annual Neuro-Ophthalmology Update. Teaching is a core component of the fellowship experience, providing fellows with valuable opportunities to mentor and collaborate with residents and medical students.
In addition to intensive clinical training, research is encouraged, with abundant opportunities for publications and presentations at major national meetings including NANOS, AAO, ARVO, and AAN. Graduates emerge exceptionally well-prepared to excel in either academic medicine or private practice, having developed comprehensive diagnostic and management skills across the breadth of neuro-ophthalmology.
