Zeba A. Syed, MD

Director, Cornea Fellowship Program,, Wills Eye Hospital
Associate Professor, Ophthalmology
Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University

Research Interests: Dr. Zeba A. Syed’s research centers on advancing the understanding and management of corneal and external eye diseases, with particular emphasis on clinical outcomes, surgical innovation, health services research, and healthcare disparities. Her work addresses a wide range of anterior segment conditions, focusing on the long-term success of corneal transplantation, including risk factors for graft rejection and failure, and the sociodemographic determinants of keratoplasty outcomes. She has contributed extensively to research in keratoconus management, including corneal collagen crosslinking techniques and biomechanical modeling of the cornea.
A key focus of Dr. Syed’s scholarship is improving care delivery through large-scale data analysis. Leveraging national datasets such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s IRIS® Registry, she investigates practice patterns, clinical outcomes, and disparities in care related to infectious keratitis, open globe injuries, cataract surgery complications, and keratoconus. Her research often explores real-world treatment trends and adherence to evidence-based guidelines, contributing valuable insights into how care is delivered across diverse settings.
Dr. Syed also has a strong interest in ocular wound healing and regenerative approaches, including the use of antifibrotic therapies and novel imaging techniques to better understand corneal repair mechanisms. Her work in ocular biomechanics and translational science reflects a commitment to bridging basic science with clinical application.
In addition to clinical and translational research, Dr. Syed examines structural and professional trends within ophthalmology, including publication practices and workforce demographics. Her interdisciplinary and collaborative approach supports her broader goal of optimizing patient outcomes and promoting equity in eye care.
