Specular Microscopy (Endothelial Cell Count)
Specular microscopy topography is a rapid, non-invasive in-office test that evaluates the cells on the back layer of the cornea, the endothelial cells. These cells pump fluid out of the cornea to keep the cornea clear. Certain conditions such as endothelial dystrophy and Fuchs dystrophy which affect the endothelial cells can be evaluated with specular microscopy. This test can examine the size, shape and density of the cells. Serial measurements can be obtained to follow the health of these cells.
