In 1974, Jerry Shields, M.D., established the Ocular Oncology Service of Wills Eye. Since then, it has steadily grown into a world renowned facility for the diagnosis and management of patients with eye tumors and related conditions. Today, the Wills Eye Ocular Oncology Service is one of the few departments in the world that deals exclusively with eye tumors.

Though eye tumors are considered rare compared to other types of cancer, they can be a serious medical condition. That is why it is so important to seek the opinion of physicians who have the expertise and skill in this area of medicine. Not surprisingly, then, patients have traveled from around the world to consult with Dr. Jerry Shields and his associates at Wills Eye, who have examined and treated more than 18,000 patients with eye tumors and related conditions.

Eye tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can be primary cancers, meaning that they are the first manifestation of a cancer (though sometimes they are not the first cancer found by examination or testing). Eye cancers can also be secondary, which means that they are the result of a spread (metastasis) of another cancer.

Tumors of the eyelid are often benign and are not uncommon. The main types of eye (ocular) cancer are malignant melanoma, conjunctival tumors and orbital tumors. Retinoblastoma is a rare but serious ocular cancer that affects children. Our physicians and staff have not only treated all of these and other types of eye tumors, but they have also helped to train several generations of residents and fellows in the care and treatment of these disorders and conducted hundreds of presentations and conferences on the subject to thousands of physicians worldwide. They have also been at the forefront of ocular cancer research, including clinical trials into new and better treatments for this disease.

The mission of the Wills Eye Ocular Oncology Service is to serve our patients in a compassionate and professional manner. A staff of highly trained patient counselors and technicians, familiar with the various types of eye tumors, assist in daily patient care. Comprehensive care is provided in a team approach with general oncologists, radiation oncologists, pediatric oncologists and the patient's referring physician.

Drs. Jerry and Carol Shields have published a three-volume atlas on ocular oncology, available here.
