Welcome to the Vickie and Jack Farber Vision Research Center

The scientist is not a person who gives the right answers, the scientist is one who asks the right questions.   Claude Levi-Strauss

Advances in technology are transforming every aspect of life, offering pathways for investigation not yet imagined.  Despite these revolutionary advances, significant disparities in access to eye care remain.  Up to 80% of vision loss can be avoided by applying current knowledge for disease detection, management and treatment, particularly in underserved communities which are at highest risk of avoidable vision loss from sight threatening conditions.

Research at Wills Eye Hospital encompasses both evaluation of the newest surgical techniques and cutting edge therapies in all ophthalmic specialties (retina, glaucoma, oncology, oculoplastics, pediatrics, etc.) and exploring strategies to ensure that standard eye care is available to populations most vulnerable to sight threatening conditions.

Created through the transformational philanthropy of Vickie and Jack Farber, the Vickie and Jack Farber Vision Research Center (VRC) at Wills Eye Hospital demonstrates a commitment to excellence in vision research aimed to impact sight preservation and eye health for generations to come.  The VRC is a vibrant and collaborative hub for advancing the clinical and translational science of ocular disease.  Our mission is to leverage clinical and technological advances in health delivery systems, data analytics, artificial intelligence, genetics and precision medicine to drive breakthroughs through collaboration and innovation that empower lives by preserving vision through preventing, treating and curing eye disease.  This overarching goal complements the outstanding clinical and training environment at Wills Eye Hospital.

Through the Center Cores, the Biostatistics Consulting Core, the Clinical Research Program, and the Administrative Core, the Vickie and Jack Farber Vision Research Center facilitates and supports high quality research across the clinical sub-specialties, ranging from study design and biostatistical analysis to the conduct of on-site clinical trials.   Moreover, the Vision Research Center fosters education of clinical faculty, staff and trainees in research methodology, emphasizing clinical and epidemiological research to advance the goals of disease prevention, evidence-based medicine, therapy and improved access to health care and patient outcomes.   The Vickie and Jack Farber Vision Research Center at Wills Eye is shaping the future of ophthalmology.
