LVPEI: The Clinic
As I touched on in a previous
entry, the approach to tackling the patient load amounts to a bit of a frenzy.
The team is ready by 8, the optometry students franticly work the patients up, and
the fellows pop into rooms to write up assessment and plans, prepare the file
for the consultant, and move on to the next room that’s ready for
assessment. The resident is merely
hanging on for the ride, timely interjecting himself into the room after the
work up but before the fellow heads for the room. The transfer of knowledge from the attending
to the trainees occurs in small bouts as they collect behind him in an exam
room, or gather to catch tidbits of his thought process wondered aloud in front
of the CT film light box. If you move too slowly through this cycle, or interject yourself with
ill-timing into the work flow, you can expect to be sternly re-directed.
