Amniotic Membrane Transplantation (AMT)

Indications

Certain abnormalities of the cornea and conjunctiva that aren’t healing well such as persistent epithelial defect, painful corneal edema, corneal melting, post-infection corneal inflammation. AM can also be used to cover conjunctival defects such as those from pterygium surgery, conjunctival tumor excision, conjunctival scarring excision, stem cell transplantation.
 

Procedure

Amniotic membrane tissue can be glued or sutured to the corneal or conjunctival surface. Amniotic membrane tissue is commercially available for such procedures, which are generally performed in the operating room under topical or local anesthesia.
