William E. Benson, MD

Biography

Dr. William Benson graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa cum Laude from Yale University. He is a graduate of College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University. He completed his internship at Presbyterian Hospital, New York City, and his residency in Ophthalmology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. He completed a Fellowship in Retinal Diseases at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Benson serves as Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine. Dr. Benson joined Mid Atlantic Retina, formerly Retinovitreous Associates, in 1976. He is Board Certified in Ophthalmology and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Benson is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, The Retina Society, The Macula Society, and the American Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Benson is also a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, College of Physicians, Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County Medical Society, Inter-County Ophthalmological Society and the Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter of American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Benson was voted One of the Best Ophthalmologists in America in 1996, Ophthalmology Times. He has received the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and has been honored as a Life Member by the Ophthalmic Club of Philadelphia. Dr. Benson has served on editorial boards of several ophthalmology publications and has authored numerous books and articles on vitreoretinal diseases. Dr. Benson is fluent in French.
