Biography

Omesh P. Gupta, MD, MBA is a Board Certified ophthalmologist and on staff of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital. He graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rochester with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics. At the time, he was the first graduate of the combined 5-year MD/MBA program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine with Distinction in Research and a Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Health Sciences Management.

Dr. Gupta completed his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye where he was selected by his peers and attending staff to serve as Chief Resident. As a vitreoretinal fellow, he was awarded two prestigious national honors, the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship Award and the Ronald G. Michels Retinal Fellowship Foundation Award. He is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retinal Specialists, Greater Philadelphia Ophthalmic Society, Society of Heed Fellows, Wills Eye Hospital Society, and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Dr. Gupta has been awarded numerous research grants from local and national organizations, including the National Institutes of Health. He has been an invited instructor for vitreoretinal surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and invited speaker to present scientific papers at both national and international meetings. He serves on the editorial board of New Retina MD and Evidence-Based Ophthalmology. He has authored numerous articles and book chapters, and has been invited manuscript referee for the journals: Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Retina, British Journal of Ophthalmology, and Retinal Cases and Brief Reports.

His clinical interests include advanced treatments for age-related macular degeneration, macular hole, macular pucker, diabetic retinopathy complications, complex retinal detachments, complications of cataract surgery, retinal vascular disease, and ocular infection and inflammation. His research interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, vitreoretinal surgery, teleophthalmology, and value-based medicine.
