Biography

Mitchell S. Fineman, MD is an Associate Surgeon on the Retina Service at Wills Eye Hospital and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He graduated summa cum laude from Emory University School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his medical internship at UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ and performed his ophthalmology residency and a two year vitreoretinal fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital.

Following his formal training, Dr. Fineman was in private practice for three years as a vitreoretinal surgeon in Pittsburgh, PA and was a Clinical Instructor in Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Fineman is Board Certified in Ophthalmology.

Dr. Fineman is a member and fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Montgomery County Medical Society, and the American Society of Retina Specialists (Vitreous Society). He is also a member of the Greater Philadelphia Ophthalmic Society, an organization dedicated to the continuing education and information sharing of ophthalmologists throughout the tri-state area, where he has served as Secretary/Treasurer and President. Of special interest to Dr. Fineman is sports related ocular trauma, and he is a member of the American Society of Ocular Trauma, an organization that promotes ocular trauma prevention through education and research. Dr. Fineman is also the ophthalmologist for the Philadelphia Eagles football team.

Dr. Fineman has served as an associate examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He currently serves as a medical expert for the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program of the Department of Health and Human Services for the U. S. Department of Justice. He is a Diplomate, National Board of Medical Examiners, and serves on the Continuing Medical Education Committee of Wills Eye Hospital. He is a lecturer for the Medical Resident Education Program at Wills Eye, as well as the medical students at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He also lectures at numerous meetings and programs for the communities of the greater Philadelphia area. He has authored numerous scientific publications and also is an investigator for several major international clinical trials. Dr. Fineman is a highly regarded expert in his field and has been honored with inclusion in Best Doctors in America®, Guide to America’s Top Ophthalmologists, and a South Jersey “Top Physician.”
