Fiftieth Anniversary - Wills Eye Institute • Retina Service

Atlantic Coast Retina Club and Macula 2011 Meetings
January 27-29, 2011

Dear Colleagues

November-December 2010

Dear Colleague,

This year we have a special program to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Institute. The celebration will take place in conjunction with the annual Atlantic Coast Retina Club (ACRC) and Macula 2011 meetings. The combined meeting is scheduled to be held in Philadelphia Thursday through Saturday, January 27-29, 2011. We hope you will be able to attend all three days. The overall program schedule is as follows:

  • Residents and Fellows Case Presentations
    • Thursday, January 27, 2011: 1:30 to 5:00 pm at Wills Eye Institute

    • Cocktail Reception to follow at 5:30 pm
  • Atlantic Coast Retina Club (ACRC) Meeting
    • Friday, January 28, 2011: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm at The Union League of Philadelphia
    • Presentation of unusual and challenging cases, with open and lively discussions

    • Cocktail Reception 6:00-8:00 pm The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 118-128 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA. Exclusive preview and tour of ANATOMY/ACADEMY — the first exhibition to focus on how Philadelphia's dynamic art and science communities fostered knowledge of the human body. The new exhibit, which opens to the public on January 29, 2011, coincides with the return to PAFA of Thomas Eakins's famous masterwork The Gross Clinic, 1875, Oil on canvas.
  • Macula 2011 Meeting
    • Saturday, January 29, 2011: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm The Union League of Philadelphia
    • Didactic formal presentations by guest faculty and members of the Retina Service of Wills Eye Institute

    • 50th Anniversary Celebration of Wills Eye Retina Service 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM in the Union League's Lincoln Hall; Individual tickets: $250; proceeds to benefit the J. Arch McNamara, MD Memorial Fund for Retina Research and Education. Black tie optional

Anyone who wishes to present a case on Thursday or Friday should go to the Atlantic Coast Retina Club link. To insure inclusion in the program, please respond with a title and category of your case as soon as possible. We are setting a deadline of December 20, 2010 for receipt of titles for case presentations. The category must be included, even if it is a mystery case. Since we anticipate a very large turnout, you should tentatively plan to present your case in three minutes or less and we will try to allow at least three minutes for discussion. We may change the time for presentation, depending on the number of responses.

The organizing committee has out together an excellent Saturday program with invited speakers from all over the country. The Saturday Macula 2011 meeting and other "celebration" information is posted this website. Should there be any questions about the events, please contact:

November-December 2010

To: Members of the Atlantic Coast Retina Club and Colleagues

Dear Colleague:

The Annual Atlantic Coast Retina Club and Macula 2011 is scheduled to be held in Philadelphia on Thursday-Saturday, January 27-29, 2011. In the past, the program was only on Friday and Saturday. This year we have a special program to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Retina Service at Wills Eye Institute. On Friday, we will have the usual case presentations all day long. Because of the anticipated large number of cases, we have elected to start the meeting on Thursday at 1:00 pm with residents and fellow cases as was done at the last 2 meetings in Baltimore and New York. We invite all to join us this year at the ACRC Club Meeting. The overall program schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, January 27, 2011
1:30 to 5:00 pm at Wills Eye
    • Atlantic Coast Retina Club Meeting
      • Interesting cases presented by Residents and Fellows with open discussion and commentary.
      • Cocktail Reception to follow at 5:30 pm
  • Friday, January 28, 2011
7:00 am to 5:00 pm at The Union League of Philadelphia
    • Atlantic Coast Retina Club Meeting
      • Presentation of a series of unusual and challenging retinal cases followed by open and lively discussions.
      • Cocktail Reception 6:00 pm The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
      • Exclusive preview and tour of ANATOMY/ACADEMY the first exhibition to focus on how Philadelphia's dynamic art and science communities fostered knowledge of the human body.
  • Saturday, January 29, 2011
7:00 am to 5:00 pm The Union League of Philadelphia
    • Macula 2011 Meeting
      • Didactic format presentations by guest faculty and members of the Retina Service of Wills Eye Institute
      • 50th Anniversary Celebration of Wills Eye Retina Service 7:00 to 11:00 pm in the Union League's Lincoln Hall; Individual tickets: $250; proceeds to benefit the J. Arch McNamara, MD Memorial Fund for Retina Research and Education. Black tie optional.

Each person who wishes to present a case should provide the title or general category (preferably both) by returning the 'questionnaire form' as soon as possible. We will try to arrange the presentations into general categories to facilitate the discussions and the flow of the meeting. Since we anticipate a very large turnout, we believe you should tentatively plan to present your case in two minutes or less and we will try to allow at least three minutes for discussion. We may change the time for presentation, depending on the final response. If you are a resident or fellow and wish to present please indicate on the attached form.

To insure a case on the program, however, please respond with a title and category as soon as possible. The category must be included, even if it is a mystery case. That will help us to arrange the program.

Carl Regillo, Gary Brown, Julia Haller, and Arunan Sivalingam have arranged an excellent Saturday program and have invited a number of excellent speakers.

We hope that you can attend all 3 days to celebrate the historic 50th Anniversary of the Retina Service and to enjoy interesting cases and lectures with your colleagues.

We are excited about the Thursday, Friday and Saturday programs and hope you will mark your calendar to join us. We look forward to hearing from you regarding your intentions of attending the meeting.

If you would like to present a case at the Atlantic Coast Retina Club Meetings, please respond by completing the enclosed questionnaire and returning as soon as possible.

With best wishes,

Jerry A. Shields, M.D.
