Educational Opportunities at Wills Eye

Education at Wills Eye has been one of the prime missions since its founding in 1832. Wills Eye established the first ophthalmic residency in the country in 1839, and later introduced training programs for fellows, nurses and allied personnel. The Wills Eye name is known internationally and attracts visiting physicians from many countries. Continuing medical education (CME) is provided for physicians, nurses and technicians.

The residency is the prime teaching structure at Wills Eye. Training of residents takes place with lectures, practical sessions and a diverse didactic program. This program is in many cases open to other local residents and physicians. Many of the courses are free for anyone interested in attending. The Department of Medical Education has information about the curriculum and lecture series.

Fellowships in Oculoplastics, Neuro-Ophthalmology, Cornea, Pediatrics, Glaucoma, Oncology and Retina are available. Some fellowships involve mostly research.

Medical students from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University rotate at Wills Eye as part of their medical training. Occasionally, it is possible for medical students from other institutions or abroad to spend time at Wills Eye.

However, because of space limitations, this is not always available. The office Of Medical Education should be contacted with any questions about rotations at Wills Eye. Special courses for technicians or nurses are coordinated by local societies and take place throughout the year. Information is available from the office of Medical Education.
