Retinoschisis

Retinoschisis is a disease that splits the retinal layers. The gene defect is on the x chromosome and is carried by the mother.

X-linked

X-linked retinoschisis affects the macula, the area of the retina responsible for central vision, but some central vision is usually maintained. Retinal detachement occasionally occurs.

Acquired

Peripheral retinoschisis, more common in adults, (both men and women) should be followed because 4% can develop retinal detachment. Most do not develop visual problems.
