Herpes Simplex Keratitis

The herpes simplex virus, the same virus that causes cold sores around the mouth (not the one that causes venereal disease), can infect the cornea and cause pain and decreased vision. Treatment is with antiviral and often anti-inflammatory medications. Occasionally, severe corneal scarring can be treated with surgery.
