The Low Vision Evaluation
The low vision evaluation begins with an interview to determine your specific needs. Specialized tests are performed to determine your actual level of visual function and the size and location of your blind spot. Optical Lenses are used shrink the blind spot and to test the vision around the deficit. A personalize program is then developed to maximize your visual potential. An optical system (Special Glasses) is usually prescribed that includes your base refractive error and the special optics that are needed to maximize your vision. The initial evaluation may be up to one hours in duration. A relative or friend is invited to be present during your evaluation and follow-ups. The initiation visit is usually one to two weeks later. At that time you begin your customized program of letter and word recognition along with the instructions for your new reading pattern. Between one and three follow-up visits are \required over the next six months with ongoing care at six to twelve month intervals. Further evaluations, testing and training with magnifiers, telescopes, electronic and computers are part of the follow-up and ongoing management of your low vision condition. It is very important that you bring all eyeglasses, magnifiers or telescopes that you have in your possession to each office visit.
