Low Vision Aids

Low vision aids are often incorporated into your long term plan. These typically include three viewing ranges:

  • Near aids include hand and stand magnifiers, microscopes, computers and closed-circuit television systems.
  • Intermediate aids are telemicroscopes and electronic magnifiers (Elvis, Jordie, OcuTec) .
  • Distance aids are hand-held or spectacle-mounted telescopes and electronic meagnifiers.

Additionally, non-optical aids such as large print materials, writing guides and filters are available.

The aids can vary in cost from $5 to $10,000, depending on the specific aid. The average cost is about $300.

A deposit is required on all low vision aids and payment must be made in full upon receipt of the aid.

Your eye doctor may refer you to the Wills Eye Low Vision Service, or you can call and make an appointment on your own. Evaluations are conducted by appointment only. In addition to your Low Vision care, you will be referred back to your eye doctor for your ongoing primary eye care.
