LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis)

LASIK can be performed for low to moderately high levels of nearsightedness, (up to 10 diopters) of farsightedness and astigmatism. It is done using topical anesthetic drops. The LASIK procedure involves using a microkeratome (an automated blade) to peel a flap off the top third of the cornea, move it out of the way, then use the excimer laser to shave down the middle of the cornea after which the top third is flipped back on to cover the area removed by the laser. The vision typically improves dramatically over 24 to 48 hours.

Dr. Rapuano has been performing LASIK since 1997. The advantage to LASIK over PRK is less post-operative pain, faster visual recovery and less corneal haze. Disadvantages include its somewhat shorter track record as it is a relatively new technique, and the occasional problems related to flap creation and/or healing.
