Research

Research at Wills Eye has a long and distinguished history dating back to 1952. Wills Eye performs both clinical and basic research in the laboratories of the hospital’s research department, in the subspecialty services, and in cooperative efforts involving both ophthalmologists and laboratory scientists.

Charitable contributions towards research at Wills Eye provide critical resources necessary in helping us reduce or eliminate the disabling effects of eye disease both in our community and around the world.

Macular degeneration, Stickler syndrome, glaucoma and ocular cancers in children and adults are the primary areas of research taking place at Wills Eye using the most advanced scientific equipment. Through molecular genetics, gene identification and gene sequencing investigators are compiling critical data for use in future treatments or cures of these blinding diseases.

Primary to all research conducted at Wills Eye is the improvement of the diagnosis of eye diseases and conditions as well as the development of better methods of treatment. Other research is aimed at developing new treatments for infectious or inflammatory eye disease, either of which, if not treated promptly and effectively, can permanently diminish sight.
